How to Choose a Professional Roofer

The advice below applies to any contractor you talk to — including us. Hold everyone to it, and you'll never get burned.

The Checklist

Six Things to Verify Before You Sign

Verify license and insurance — with documents

Ask for the license number and current certificates of general liability and workers' comp. A legitimate contractor hands these over without flinching; we do.

Local address, local history

A contractor with a physical office and years of local jobs will still exist when your warranty needs honoring. Ask how long they've worked your parish — and check.

Beware the post-storm door knock

After hurricanes, out-of-state crews canvass neighborhoods, collect deductibles, and vanish by winter. Never sign an assignment of benefits at the door.

Get the warranty in writing — both of them

Materials are covered by the manufacturer; installation by the contractor. If the workmanship warranty is vague or verbal, keep shopping.

Demand an itemized quote

Materials, labor, decking allowance, haul-off, permits — line by line. A single lump-sum number hides everything you'd want to compare.

Check certifications, not just reviews

Manufacturer certifications (Owens Corning, IKO, Malarkey) mean trained crews and stronger registered warranties — things a star rating can't verify.

Straight Answers

Hiring Questions, Answered

Should I get multiple quotes?

Yes — and compare scope, not just price. The cheapest bid usually gets cheap somewhere you can't see: decking allowances, underlayment grade, or the crew itself.

Is a big deposit normal?

Modest scheduling deposits are common; large upfront payments are a red flag. Be especially wary of anyone wanting your insurance check endorsed over before work starts.

What should I ask about the crew?

Employed or subcontracted? Background-checked? Who supervises on site? You're trusting these people on your home — it's fair to ask.
